Understanding how to approach your move can be easily overlooked if your not careful, as there are necessary tasks that will need to be addressed to stay on top of your schedule, which at times will overlap your current lifestyle arrangements. Continue on reading and follow our individual tips on where to start so you have the ultimate moving experience.

...Before you move out, think of any minor or major repairs needed to your property regarding the end of lease or contract of sale.

Instead of throwing away old batteries and electronics, find an electronics recycling center in your area.

Create a folder to keep a record of everything related to your move (receipts, inventory, etc.). Include any estimates you may have acquired: removalists, skip-bin hire, cleaners etc.

Sell, donate to charity at The Salvos or St Vinnies or discard of any unwanted items, especially go through storage cartons, sheds and garages to make sure you wont take any unwanted items with you .

Consider exploring schooling options for your children and enrol them if required. Notify current schools and arrange for any records to be transferred.

Make sure you have all the keys to your current home—ask friends and family to return any spare keys

Save time and use the online service offered by Australia Post to create an account and have your mail redirected to your new address. You can choose to have your redirection for 3, 6 or 12 months.

Mobile phone accounts, online subscriptions and banking details can all be changed online. Government departments such as Medicare and the Electoral Commission, can also be changed online – a full list can be found here.

You’ll need to check with your doctors, vets, childcare and/or schools as to whether they have an online update service.

When you know your move-out date, you can arrange for your utilities to be disconnected at the house you are moving out of, and connected ready for your arrival at your new house. These include:

Water

Sometimes utility providers will require access to your new house, which may mean a delay in getting connected, so make sure you have a contingency plan in place. Are you packing your household items yourself? If so you’ll need a supply of good-quality moving boxes and strong packing tape that won’t give way, National Storage or Bunnings seems to be popular and many removalist companies and storage facilities sell boxes, or you can ask for any secondhand cartons at local stores.

Also, try to start packing the non-day-to-day items earlier to reduce the workload closer to your move date. If you’re moving a whole house inventory, it could take a long time and you will thank yourself later for being organised. click here to organize some experienced and helpful packing staff.

As you dissemble furniture, keep all screws and hardware in a plastic bag. Label the bag and tape it to the furniture itself, or designate a separate box with hardware for all your furniture. We can help on the day too!

Measure fridge spaces, laundry spaces, dining table settings If a piece of furniture can’t fit in your new home, get rid of it.

Talk to your boss and organise time off work. Depending on the scale of your move, you may need both the day before, and the day of your move.

If you have pets, you will also need to update their registration details with your current and future council office. You may even need to confirm pet transportation if moving long distance.

Organise babysitters for your children and pets on moving day.

Back-up your computers and devices around your home, store files securely and in order.

Confirm your booking with removalist and investigate any restrictions to property access, lift access or any parking restrictions imposed by any body corporate, road signage etc.

In the kitchen, now is a good time to use up all opened packets, excess products and/or cleaning supplies and dispose of goods past their use-by date.

Organise insurance. Cover your Home and Content insurance from day one.

Notify Electoral Office of your new address details. Also update any Drivers Licence and Car Registration. tax office, banks and any other important contacts.

Set you and your families essentials aside. Keep small, important items (like remotes, keys and chargers) in a specially marked box. Also gather all current premises air conditioner, or any other remotes or items belonging to the property that may be accidentally packed. Keep bedding and towels, clothes etc. for moving day in a separate area at your uplift address, or in a clearly marked packing carton.

Make sure all petrol powered outdoor equipment such as lawn mowers, chainsaws and whipper snippers have all their fuel supplies emptied.

Empty BBQ oil drip collectors or sand trays and remove gas bottle - Unless the gas cylinder has been purged, and has relevant / current certificate provided, it may not travel with your chosen removalist.

A good idea is to let your neighbours know your moving, as they get plenty of notice as to expect the moving truck etc.

Disassemble bulky or awkward items e.g., trampolines, swing sets, gazebos, garage/shed racks and shelving, bundle tools.

Organise keys for the new owner/tenant, padlocks, screens. Sort out your new locations keys, and any real estate related action follow-ups.

When moving interstate, or out of town, Service your vehicle/s and check tyres or fluids levels to ensure a safe trip, and so you can arrive on time.

Arrange a property inspection, to finalise lease and for any bond owing to you.
The Day before

If we at Truckless Removals are fortune enough to have you as our valued client, we shall have already been in touch, if your moving company has not given you a call, contact their operations manager or driver, to check to see what is happening. On-time everytime is not always achievable in road transport.

Dismantle all beds, cots, tables, keeping fixtures bolts and hardware back in/on their threads or in a bag attached to the item. There is nothing worse than missing parts!

Make a moving kit, compile everything you will need for the next few days e.g. phone chargers, mugs, coffee, medication, keys to new property, kids toys etc.

Turn off fridges, freezers and appliances that are not being used, remove excess water from washing machine, irons, ensuring they are clean and dry for transit

Check on the status of your new home, make sure everything has been fixed and cleaned. Check for power and familiarise where all your new lights and fan switches are, meter box location. Check the security of the premises, including gates/fences to find any problems or missing security measures.

Find your eskies and coolers you will need for the moving day, put drinks on the ice, organise takeaways/dinner, and rest up!!
